Logistics

The paddle took place during June/July 2005, with the round trip from Cape Town and back taking 34 days. The trip, from south to north due to the prevailing winds, started in Mangochi (Malawi) and the paddle finished in Matema (Tanzania), completing over 750km of the lake. There have been a number of paddling expeditions on the lake, yet no group has paddled the entire length from mouth to source within the time limit that we completed the paddle in. The members of the eight-person-crew have been carefully selected from our group of friends, and we believed fully in each other’s ability.

We will paddled on a rotation system; this worked by having six paddlers kayaking at a time, while two paddlers drove the support vehicles to the next pit stop. The two paddlers who were previously with the support vehicle on the last leg swapped with the two paddlers who had been on for the longest. This rotation system allowed us to cover large distances at fast rate, without having to rest every few days. The longest time any two paddlers paddled was eight days.     Being able to meet up with the support vehicles every 2-3 days allowed the paddlers to get a wholesome meal into their stomachs, a comfortable bed, and a chance to deal with any agendas, such as boat repairs or health problems, and document all data recorded.  We camped for the majority of the time, to reduce costs, however on certain occasions we had the option of sleeping in chalets.  The nights that the paddlers were not scheduled to meet up with the support crew, they found a suitable beach (secluded) or island for the night.
